A lorry loader, also known as a knuckle boom crane or a loader crane, is a versatile piece of equipment that is used to load and unload heavy cargo. It is typically mounted on a truck or a trailer, and it consists of a hydraulic arm with a boom and a grapple or a hook at the end. The lorry loader can be used to handle a wide range of materials, from pallets and containers to heavy machinery and construction equipment.
The main advantage of a lorry loader is its mobility. Unlike a stationary crane, which is fixed to a specific location, a lorry loader can be driven to any site where it is needed. This makes it ideal for construction sites, ports, warehouses, and other locations where heavy lifting is required. Another advantage of a lorry loader is its flexibility. It can be used to lift and transport materials in a variety of ways, depending on the needs of the job.
One of the key features of a lorry loader is its hydraulic system. The hydraulic system consists of a pump, a reservoir, and a series of hoses and cylinders. The pump is powered by the truck's engine, and it pressurizes the hydraulic fluid in the reservoir. The fluid is then distributed through the hoses to the cylinders, which use the pressure to move the boom and the grapple or hook.
The boom of a lorry loader is typically made of steel and consists of several sections that can be extended or retracted. The boom is mounted on a hinge, which allows it to move up and down and side to side. The grapple or hook is attached to the end of the boom and can be rotated to pick up and move materials in different directions.
Lorry loaders come in a variety of sizes and capacities, ranging from small cranes that can lift a few hundred kilograms to large cranes that can lift several tonnes. The capacity of the crane is determined by several factors, including the length and strength of the boom, the weight of the grapple or hook, and the power of the hydraulic system.
There are several types of lorry loaders available on the market, each designed for a specific application. For example, there are lorry loaders that are designed for use in the construction industry, where they are used to lift and move heavy building materials, such as steel beams, concrete blocks, and prefabricated panels. There are also lorry loaders that are designed for use in the shipping industry, where they are used to load and unload cargo containers from ships and transport them to and from the port.
One of the key benefits of a lorry loader is its ability to save time and increase efficiency. With a lorry loader, materials can be loaded and unloaded quickly and easily, without the need for manual labour or additional equipment. This can save time and reduce the risk of injury to workers.
Another benefit of a lorry loader is its cost-effectiveness. While the initial investment in a lorry loader may be high, the long-term cost savings can be significant. A lorry loader can reduce the need for additional equipment, such as forklifts or cranes, and it can also reduce the need for manual labour, which can be expensive and time-consuming.
